Sleep Support
When (and when not) melatonin helps.
Melatonin is a hormone your brain releases in the dark to mark nighttime. As a supplement it is useful for shifting a clock: jet lag, a delayed sleep phase, sometimes shift work. It is a weak sedative. Taking more because 3 mg did not knock you out misunderstands the drug.
Used in small doses, earlier in the evening, melatonin can pull a late clock backward. Used as a high-dose candy at 11 p.m., it often does little for sleep onset and leaves people groggy or dreaming in a way they dislike.
The doses sold in the US are often far above what changes a circadian signal. That is marketing, not physiology. A clinician can suggest a dose and a time. The bottle's 'extra strength' banner is not a target.
Jet lag and a teenager, or an adult, who cannot fall asleep until 2 a.m. are the classic fits. Waking at 3 a.m. with anxiety is usually not a melatonin deficiency. Menopause night sweats are not either. Treat the heat.
Older adults sometimes have a blunter nighttime signal, and a low dose is discussed. They are also more sensitive to morning hangover and to falls if anything else sedating is on board.
Independent tests have found melatonin products that do not match their label. Buy a brand you can name, and tell the clinician the milligrams. 'A gummy' is not a dose.
It can interact with other sedatives and with some medicines processed by the liver. Pregnancy and autoimmune questions belong in the visit if they are yours. Do not give an adult gummy to a child because they will not settle.
Melatonin works by telling your brain that night has arrived, which means the hour you take it matters more than the dose. Taken a few hours before your target bedtime, a small amount can nudge a late clock earlier. Taken right at lights-out as a would-be sedative, it often does little except leave you foggy the next morning.
Get the timing wrong and it can push sleep the wrong direction, which is why a clinician sets both the dose and the clock for your specific pattern. Jet lag going east is not the same instruction as a teenager who cannot fall asleep until 2 a.m. The bottle cannot know which one you are.
