Iodine for thyroid hormone synthesis.
Iodine is required to make thyroid hormone. Too little causes trouble. Too much, especially if you have Hashimoto's or a nodule, also causes trouble. Most people eating iodized salt and dairy are not deficient. A high-dose dropper is not a thyroid tune-up.
Pregnancy raises iodine needs, and that is a prenatal conversation with a measured product, not a kelp mega-dose. People who avoid salt, dairy, and seafood and live on a narrow diet can run low. A clinician can think about that with you.
Everyone else should be suspicious of bottles that offer milligrams when the daily need is in micrograms. Those are not the same unit. The difference is a thousandfold, and the labels count on you not noticing.
It can trigger or worsen autoimmune thyroid disease and it can tip a hot nodule into too much hormone. People with Hashimoto's are the ones most often sold iodine, and they are among the worst candidates for a big dose.
If you already take thyroid medicine, do not add iodine and then wonder why the TSH moved. Tell the clinician about kelp, seaweed snacks, and any 'thyroid support' blend. Those blends are where iodine hides.
The single most important thing to understand about iodine bottles is the unit. Your daily need is measured in micrograms, and plenty of products offer milligrams, a thousandfold more, counting on you not to notice the difference. Iodized salt and dairy already cover most people, so a high-dose dropper is not a thyroid tune-up; it is an overdose waiting for a reason.
That mismatch is why 'more iodine for a sluggish thyroid' is usually backwards. Deficiency is uncommon in the US, and when hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimoto's rather than a lack of iodine, adding a big dose treats a problem you do not have while risking one you do.
The cruel irony is that people with Hashimoto's, the group most often sold iodine 'for the thyroid,' are among the worst candidates for a large dose, because excess iodine can trigger or worsen autoimmune thyroid disease. It can also tip a hot nodule into making too much hormone. The bottle's promise and the actual risk point in opposite directions.
It also hides where you would not look: kelp, seaweed snacks, and 'thyroid support' blends can carry a lot of iodine with an unpredictable dose. If you take thyroid medicine, mention all of those before you wonder why a TSH moved, and prefer a known micro-dose or nothing over a mystery dropper.
