DHEA Therapy

Levels fall with age. That observation became a supplement aisle. Replacing it willy-nilly raises androgens in women and can cause oily skin, facial hair, and a shorter temper. In men it is rarely the missing piece if testosterone is already being managed.

A blood level, a symptom, and a reason beat a 50 mg capsule from a gym because the bottle said vitality. If Thrivelab suggests DHEA, it should come with a recheck and a stop rule.

Women, often around menopause, with a low DHEA-S and symptoms such as low drive or a flat sense of well-being, after estrogen and sleep and medicines were looked at. Some clinicians use small doses. The word small matters.

People with hormone-sensitive cancers, PCOS already running high androgens, or pregnancy should not experiment. Say the history. The supplement being over-the-counter does not make it casual.

Acne, scalp hair, a voice change, and irritability are stop-and-call items. So is a level that comes back far above the range. More energy is not the only outcome, and it is not worth a new set of androgen effects you did not ask for.

Do not stack DHEA with testosterone cream and a mystery 'adrenal' blend. One prescriber should see the whole androgen picture.

Age-related is not the same as fixable, and not the same as harmless.

Used carefully, in a woman with a genuinely low level and a real symptom after the obvious causes were checked, a small monitored dose is a reasonable trial. Bought off a gym shelf at a round number because a bottle promised youth, it is a gamble with your skin, your hair, and your mood. The difference is a level, a reason, and a recheck.
