Hair Loss Treatment
Hormone- and nutrient-driven plans for women.
Hair loss treatment for women starts by refusing to assume it is the same problem men have. Iron, thyroid, recent illness, childbirth, traction from styles, and hormones all thin hair. Pattern loss is real in women too. The workup comes before a lifelong pill.
Ferritin that is 'normal' on a lab slip and still low enough to shed. A thyroid that was checked once in 2019. Telogen effluvium after a fever, a surgery, or stopping a birth-control pill, which sheds months later and confuses everyone. Tight braids and ponytails. A GLP-1 that dropped weight fast.
Androgenetic loss in women often shows up as a widening part, not a receding temple. Both can exist. Photos of the part are more useful than a handful of hair from the shower drain.
Minoxidil, topical or oral, is the common medicine. Spironolactone comes up when androgens are part of the story, and it is not a casual add-on if pregnancy is possible. Finasteride is generally avoided in women who could become pregnant.
Fixing iron or thyroid can matter more than any hair serum. If those labs are the plan, give them time. Adding four products in week one makes it impossible to know what helped.
Less shed in the drain, then a softer look at the part, over months. Baby hairs along the hairline can be new growth or broken hair. Your clinician can help you tell. A bad week of shedding after a dye job is not the whole trend.
If you are postpartum, a lot of shedding is the delayed drop of hair that stayed in growth during pregnancy. It is frightening and often temporary. Medicine is not always the first move. Time and labs are.
Female hair loss punishes impatience, because whether the fix is iron, thyroid, or minoxidil, the scalp answers in months, not weeks. Adding four products at once feels proactive and makes it impossible to learn which one helped or which one caused a new problem. One change, given a fair stretch, teaches you more than a full shelf tried in a panic.
Postpartum shedding is its own timeline and its own reassurance: much of it is hair that stayed put during pregnancy dropping on a delay, and it is frightening precisely because it clumps. That version is often temporary, and the first move is frequently time and labs rather than a lifelong pill. A clinician can tell you which kind of shed you are watching.
Treatment is provided through Jonathan Larson MDPC. Prescriptions require a clinical evaluation; medication is dispensed only when deemed medically necessary. Information here is educational and not a substitute for medical advice.
