Hair Loss Treatment
Finasteride for androgenic alopecia in men.
Finasteride for hair loss blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the androgen that miniaturizes follicles in male pattern loss. It is a prescription. It can affect sexual function. It is dangerous in pregnancy, including through a partner's exposure to crushed tablets. Those two facts belong in the first conversation.
Men with pattern loss who want to slow the process, often alongside minoxidil. It is better at keeping hair than at rebuilding a bare scalp. Starting when the loss is early is more satisfying than starting when the mirror has been bad for a decade, though late starts still get discussed.
Women who are pregnant or could become pregnant should not take it or handle broken tablets. That is not a gentle suggestion. Some clinicians use it in postmenopausal women in specific cases. It is not a casual borrow from a boyfriend's bottle.
Lower libido, weaker erections, and lower ejaculate volume happen in a minority of men and are the reason people fear the drug. They also happen for other reasons in the same years men start losing hair, which makes the story muddy. Report changes. A clinician can stop the drug. Most men who get those effects see them ease after stopping. A small number report symptoms that linger, and that possibility should be said before you swallow the first tablet, not after.
If your sex life is already in trouble, finasteride is a harder yes. Say so. There are other ways to treat hair.
It is a daily habit. Missed days are not a disaster. Doubling up is not a strategy. Blood donation rules and PSA lab interpretation can be affected. Mention finasteride to any doctor drawing a prostate lab.
Topical finasteride exists as an attempt to reduce systemic exposure. Evidence and absorption still vary. If that is what you want, ask. Do not crush oral tablets into a shampoo.
Finasteride is a genuinely effective drug and a genuinely serious conversation at the same time, and both halves are true. It is better at keeping the hair you have than rebuilding a bare scalp, which makes starting early more rewarding than starting after a decade of loss. Weighed against that benefit is a real, if minority, chance of sexual side effects and a strict pregnancy-exposure rule.
The right way to decide is out loud, before the first tablet: what your baseline sex life is, whether a partner is pregnant or could be, and how much the hair actually bothers you. If your libido is already struggling, it is a harder yes, and there are other ways to treat hair. A clinician who rushes past that talk is doing it wrong.
