Thyroid Health
Managing Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
Hashimoto's treatment is the long management of autoimmune hypothyroidism: antibodies that mark the diagnosis, hormone replacement when the gland falls behind, and a refusal to promise that a diet will erase the antibodies. Thrivelab can manage the hormone piece and order the labs. A swollen, painful, or nodular thyroid still needs local eyes.
It is autoimmune thyroiditis. TPO antibodies, and sometimes thyroglobulin antibodies, show the immune system is aimed at the gland. Over years the gland often underproduces hormone. Early on, levels can swing, including brief periods of too much hormone, which feels like anxiety and gets mislabeled as stress.
Antibodies confirm the tendency. They do not, by themselves, set the dose. People with antibodies and a normal TSH may need watching rather than medicine. People with a high TSH need treatment whether or not anyone repeats the antibody for drama.
Levothyroxine or another thyroid hormone when replacement is indicated, taken correctly, rechecked on schedule. Selenium, gluten elimination, and a stack of supplements have fans. The evidence that they change the course is thinner than the blogs. If you want to try a diet, do it as an experiment you can describe, not instead of the hormone you actually need.
Pregnancy is the high-stakes version. Antibody-positive women need a plan before conception when possible, and fast dose adjustments once pregnant. Loop in obstetrics. Do not freelance.
It happens. The next move is to check whether the labs are actually fine, whether the dose is taken in a way that absorbs, and whether iron, sleep, depression, or celiac disease is in the room. Hashimoto's does not own every symptom you will ever have.
A trial of a different thyroid preparation is reasonable for some people after that list is touched. It is a trial, with an endpoint, not a new identity.
Early Hashimoto's can leak hormone as the gland is attacked, so you get short stretches of feeling wired, hot, and anxious before the long slide into underactive. It gets mistaken for stress or a panic problem and treated as neither thyroid nor honest. If your symptoms flip between too-fast and too-slow, that pattern is worth naming to the clinician.
A flare is not a reason to double a dose on your own. It is a reason to recheck the level and adjust deliberately. The disease is slow and lumpy; the dosing should be slow and deliberate to match.
Treatment is provided through Jonathan Larson MDPC. Prescriptions require a clinical evaluation; medication is dispensed only when deemed medically necessary. Information here is educational and not a substitute for medical advice.
