Thyroid Health
Diagnosis and treatment of underactive thyroid.
Hypothyroidism treatment replaces thyroid hormone when the gland is not making enough, most often with levothyroxine, adjusted off TSH and how you actually feel. The diagnosis is a lab result plus a person, not a list of symptoms from a quiz.
The classic picture is a slowing: colder than the room, slower gut, heavier periods, a voice a bit lower, hair in the brush, a weight creep that does not match the month. Mild cases look like ordinary exhaustion. Severe cases are obvious and should not be managed casually by video alone.
Hashimoto's, surgery, and radioactive iodine are common reasons the gland is underperforming. So is over-treatment in the other direction that then got stopped. Tell the story from the beginning, including any thyroid medicine a previous doctor started and you quit.
Levothyroxine is taken on an empty stomach, away from coffee, calcium, and iron, which block absorption. A dose that 'does not work' is often a dose taken with a latte. The instruction is boring because it matters.
Recheck TSH after the clinician's interval, not three days later because you are impatient. Too much hormone feels like anxiety, a fast heart, and poor sleep. Too little feels like the original problem. Both get reported. You do not split tablets into a private experiment.
If you are pregnant or trying, thyroid dose is time-sensitive and belongs in a plan with your obstetric clinician. Tell us immediately. Do not wait for a routine refill.
A visible lump, pain in the neck, or trouble swallowing needs an exam and often an ultrasound where you live. Hormone replacement does not evaluate a nodule.
No diet replaces a dose when the gland has stopped keeping up. What food can do is stop sabotaging the pill: calcium, iron, and even a hearty breakfast taken too close to the tablet drop absorption. Space them out and you often 'find' hormone you were already prescribed.
Selenium, ashwagandha, and thyroid-support blends have loud marketing and quiet evidence. Some contain actual hormone or iodine and can push your labs around. If you take one, put it on the list so the clinician is not chasing a number you spiked yourself.
Treatment is provided through Jonathan Larson MDPC. Prescriptions require a clinical evaluation; medication is dispensed only when deemed medically necessary. Information here is educational and not a substitute for medical advice.
