They mean not levothyroxine, which they have decided is synthetic and therefore lesser. Levothyroxine is a measured T4. Desiccated products contain T4 and T3 in a fixed animal ratio. One is more predictable. The other helps some people who did poorly on T4 alone. Neither is a vitamin.

Porcine-derived products matter if that is a religious or personal limit. Say so. There are other ways to include T3.

Batch variation and a T3 content that runs higher than some people need are the practical downsides. Symptoms of too much hormone get blamed on 'adjustment' for too long. A fast heart rate is not adjustment.

Combining natural thyroid with leftover levothyroxine, or with an iodine megadose, scrambles the labs. One prescriber, one plan.

Bring the prior doses and the last three TSHs if you have them. A switch is calculated, then checked. You should know what worsening would feel like and who to tell.
