Peptides are all the rage, but I know there are a lot of questions. I wanted to bring in a real medical provider to talk about what peptides are, how they may work, the current state of peptide therapy, and how to explore whether they might be right for you.

Absolutely. I'm excited to be here. Peptides have become a major buzzword, but there are many different types. I think there is a lot of helpful information for us to break down today.
Chris Powell:
Let's start with the million-dollar question: What is a peptide, and why is everyone talking about them?
Brittany Meeker:
Think of a peptide as a biological text message.
If a protein is like a large textbook, a peptide is more like a short sentence. That sentence is made up of amino acids. In the body, the peptide carries a specific message to a cell. It might tell the skin to begin producing collagen, signal the pituitary gland to release a pulse of growth hormone, or tell tissue to begin repairing an injury site.
Because peptides are native to our biology, the body can recognize and respond to those messages directly. That is the basic idea behind how peptides work.
Chris Powell:
That makes sense. Peptides seem to be everywhere now, but are they actually new? Why have they become so popular?
Brittany Meeker:
They are popular right now, but peptide therapy is not new. Peptides have been used in mainstream medicine for decades. Insulin, for example, is a peptide.
I think the current interest comes down to two major shifts. The first is the GLP-1 wave. Medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are peptides, and their success brought much more attention to peptide-based therapies and cellular signaling.
The second shift is the rise of biohacking and proactive health. More people are asking how they can optimize their health now instead of waiting until they become sick. They want to know how they can feel better today and support their health over the long term.
Chris Powell:
A lot of people are getting their peptide information from biohackers and influencers. Some of it may be legitimate, but some claims sound sensational or overhyped. What is realistic, and what is not?
Brittany Meeker:
The potential advantage of a peptide is precision. Traditional medications can sometimes affect multiple systems at once, while a peptide is intended to send a more targeted message.
Different peptides are being studied or used for goals related to recovery, gut health, sleep, metabolism, and other areas. But the overhyped idea is that peptides are a magic eraser.
You cannot eat processed food, remain inactive, take a peptide, and expect to wake up with a six-pack. Peptides may act as a biological accelerator, but they are not a replacement for the foundation.
You still need to pay attention to sleep, nutrition, movement, and other lifestyle factors. A peptide cannot out-signal a broken foundation. It may be a useful tool, but it cannot undo a consistently unhealthy lifestyle.
Chris Powell:
That makes perfect sense. My specialty has always been building that foundation. I believe these tools should support and accelerate what the foundation has already created.
I was skeptical about peptides for a long time. I spent years researching them and trying to find the holes in the claims. The more I looked into the research, the more promising the space appeared.
My personal tipping point came after I broke my back in a trampoline accident. I had compression fractures from T1 through T4 and was in extreme pain. I had previously used sermorelin about 10 years earlier, but I had not explored peptides again until that injury.
After the accident, I contacted you. I began using peptides including BPC-157, TB-500, and KPV. This is only my personal observation, not a randomized controlled trial, but I believe they significantly helped my recovery. I felt like I was back to 100 percent in about 12 weeks.
That experience made me curious about other peptides, including MOTS-c, AOD-9604, ipamorelin, and tesamorelin. These names may sound like another language to many people, but they highlight how many different roles peptides may have.
What are some of the different goals people explore peptides for?
Brittany Meeker:
There are many different peptides associated with different goals. Changing even one amino acid can change the message a peptide sends.
It can help to organize them into broad categories.
The first category is metabolic health. Peptides such as semaglutide and tirzepatide communicate with the brain and gut. They can support blood sugar regulation, slow digestion, increase feelings of fullness, and help people feel satisfied sooner. For appropriate patients, that may support weight loss and improvements in markers such as A1C and lipid levels.
Another category is recovery. BPC-157, often described as a body-protective compound, is discussed in relation to tissue repair, blood vessel formation, ligaments, joints, inflammation, and the gut lining.
Another example is NAD+, which is discussed in relation to cellular energy and mitochondrial function. The goal is to support the body's cellular energy systems and longevity pathways.
These are only a few examples. The starting point should not simply be asking which peptide is popular. It should be asking what you are trying to achieve. Different amino acid chains send different messages, so the right conversation begins with the individual's goals.

It really is. We are only scratching the surface.
There may be options for people dealing with recovery, chronic pain, metabolic challenges, sleep issues, and other concerns. The goal is not to give everyone the same treatment. It is to understand what is happening, what the patient wants to improve, and which tools may be appropriate.
Chris Powell:
That speaks to me personally. Years ago, I lived with chronic pain after herniating a disc in my back. I became dependent on painkillers for two years, and it led to a terrible downward spiral.
The possibility of having more options for recovery and pain management could give people hope. We still have to eat well, sleep well, and move our bodies, but what do you think the future of health, fitness, and wellness could look like with tools such as peptides?
Brittany Meeker:
I think the future is promising. People now have much better access to information and medical support. With a platform such as Thrivelab, someone can connect with a provider remotely and talk through their concerns and goals.

Does the vial contain the peptide listed on the label? Has it been tested for contaminants such as heavy metals? Who is overseeing the treatment? How long should the patient use it, and when should they stop?
Many peptides are injectable and may be used in cycles. It is important to have someone overseeing safety, effectiveness, lab work, lifestyle factors, and the patient's response.

Peptides may not be the right answer for everyone, and that is okay. There may be other treatments or lifestyle changes that are more appropriate.
