About Thrivelab Hormone Health

What Are Hormones?

Hormones are like the body's postal service, delivering vital chemical messages from the endocrine system to cells all across the body. Each hormone has a designated function, orchestrating everything from your emotional state to your metabolic processes. While there are many, many hormones in the body, there are a few that are especially important.

Insulin

Insulin, originating from your pancreas, plays an important role in metabolism. It helps the body absorb glucose from the bloodstream into the cells, acting as a key that unlocks the cell. This hormone is most well-known for its ability to regulate blood sugar levels.

Progesterone

Progesterone is central to women's reproductive health. It's primarily created in the ovaries following ovulation, and its main job is to prepare the uterus for a possible pregnancy. It's also involved in the regulation of the menstrual cycle.

Estrogen

Estrogen is most important for women, as it’s responsible for many of the changes that develop during female puberty, regulates the menstrual cycle, and even supports bone health. Men also produce estrogen, but they don’t typically produce as much as women do.

Testosterone

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, governing male physical features and sexual function. However, it's not exclusive to men. In women, testosterone supports bone density, mental function, and sex drive.

Cortisol

Cortisol, produced by the adrenal glands, is often referred to as the "stress hormone." It equips your body to handle stress, oversees metabolic functions, curbs inflammation, and assists with memory creation. While it’s important for fight-or-flight scenarios, an imbalance in cortisol levels can lead to health issues.

What Are the Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance?

Mood Changes

Unexplained shifts in mood, such as sudden bouts of irritability, anxiety, or depression, may indicate a hormonal issue. Hormones like serotonin, estrogen, and progesterone all contribute to regulating mood.

Sleep Disturbances

If you're finding it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep, this could be a sign of an imbalance. Hormones like melatonin and cortisol play key roles in regulating our sleep-wake cycles.

Unexplained Weight Changes

Sudden weight gain or loss, or difficulty losing weight despite diet and exercise, could also be a sign of a hormonal imbalance. Hormones like insulin, leptin, and thyroid hormones all play crucial roles in regulating metabolism and body weight.

Fatigue

Consistent feelings of tiredness, even after a good night's sleep, could be a signal of hormonal issues. Thyroid hormones, cortisol, and others can impact energy levels.

Skin Issues

If you're noticing sudden changes in your skin, such as acne, dryness, or redness, this could be a hormonal issue. Hormones like estrogen and testosterone significantly impact skin health.

Remember, these symptoms are quite common and can be linked to many conditions, not just hormonal imbalances. But if you're noticing several of these symptoms and they're impacting your quality of life, it might be worth scheduling an initial consultation with one of our qualified providers.

What Causes Hormone Imbalances?

Our bodies are complex, and while hormonal balance is important for our health, it’s also quite delicate. Luckily, once you know what can cause hormone imbalances, it can be easier to support your health.

Natural Life Phases

Certain life stages naturally bring hormonal shifts. For women, this includes times like puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, which often feature drastic shifts in estrogen and progesterone. For men, aging can result in lower testosterone.

Lifestyle Influences

Our daily habits can also significantly impact our hormonal health. For instance, chronic stress can overstimulate the production of cortisol, which can then impact the production of estrogen and testosterone. Meanwhile, poor nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle can disrupt insulin levels, leading to imbalances.

Health Conditions

Hormone balances can also be due to health conditions that directly affect hormone levels. For example, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women can lead to the overproduction of androgens like testosterone. In men, conditions like diabetes or hypogonadism can also create imbalances.

Environmental Factors

Exposure to certain environmental chemicals can also interfere with hormonal balance. These endocrine-disrupting chemicals, found in certain plastics, cosmetics, and pesticides, can either interfere with hormone production or with the way hormones interact with receptors.

Why Choose BHRT?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a specific type of hormone therapy that is designed to restore balance to your body's hormone levels by using biologically identical hormones. This makes it easier for your body to accept and utilize the hormones.

BHRT can be used to help with the symptoms of menopause, perimenopause, and andropause, as well as other conditions associated with hormone imbalances.
