About Thrivelab Hormone Health

What Are Hormones?

Think of hormones as the body's personal messaging system. They're special chemicals that are produced by glands in your endocrine system and then sent off into the bloodstream to give orders to your cells. Each hormone has a specific task, whether that's regulating your mood, controlling your metabolism, or helping with growth and development.

Hormones work behind the scenes helping to maintain balance in your body, a state called homeostasis. When this balance is off, it can lead to hormonal imbalances, which can affect how you feel and function.

What Are the Symptoms of Hormone Imbalances in Women?

While there are many possible reasons behind a persistent headache (for instance, lack of sleep and dehydration), this is also a common symptom of a hormonal imbalance. Here are a few more symptoms you shouldn’t ignore.

Menstrual Irregularities

A key sign of hormonal imbalance in women is irregular periods or completely missed cycles. This is typically due to imbalances in estrogen and progesterone. If your period is heavier, more painful, or more irregular than usual, it may be time to consult with one of our licensed hormone specialists at Thrivelab.

Weight Changes and Metabolism

Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight, even with exercise and a healthy diet, may indicate a hormonal issue. Often, this can be linked to imbalances in thyroid hormones, which play a crucial role in regulating metabolism.

Mood and Emotional Well-Being

Many women experience mood swings before or during their period. While this is common, mood swings, feelings of depression, or heightened anxiety can also be associated with hormonal imbalances.

Physical Changes

Persistent skin problems such as acne, hair loss, thinning hair, or changes in breast appearance might indicate hormonal imbalances in women.

What Are the Symptoms of Hormone Imbalances in Men?

While the term “hormonal” might not typically be used to describe men, the reality is that both men and women rely on their hormones to function. If you have one or more of the following symptoms, you might be dealing with a hormone imbalance.

Changes in Sexual Function

One of the most noticeable signs of hormonal imbalance in men is changes in sexual function. This could include reduced sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, or infertility, all of which are typically tied to testosterone levels.

Physical Changes

Men may also notice physical changes, such as reduced muscle mass and increased body fat, particularly around the abdomen. These changes can also be linked to low testosterone levels.

Emotional Changes

Just like in women, hormonal imbalances in men can impact emotional well-being. If this is the case, men might experience mood swings, depression, or anxiety.

Sleep Disturbances

Men with hormonal imbalances might experience sleep disturbances such as insomnia or increased sleepiness. In some cases, this can be linked to low testosterone levels, as testosterone plays a role in sleep regulation.

What Causes Hormone Imbalances?

Aging and Life Stages

Hormonal fluctuations are a natural part of a woman's life, especially during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. These hormonal imbalances are responsible for many of the common symptoms of these life stages, including nausea, cramping, and mood swings.

Just as women experience hormonal changes with age, so do men. Testosterone levels naturally begin to decline after the age of 30, which can lead to imbalances and uncomfortable symptoms.

Lifestyle Factors

Poor diet, inadequate sleep, and high stress can all impact hormonal balance. For instance, chronic stress can lead to the overproduction of cortisol, also called the "stress hormone," which can disrupt the overall hormonal balance. Not to mention, excess cortisol can also affect the production of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Medical Conditions

Certain health issues, like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and even diabetes, can cause hormonal imbalances. These conditions often require a long-term treatment plan, so if you suspect any of these health conditions, it’s important to get tested and treated for them.

Keep in mind, it's perfectly normal to experience hormonal fluctuations. But if you're frequently dealing with the symptoms we talked about earlier, then you may benefit from bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Deciding to pursue bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can feel like a big step, and it might be a little (or a lot) intimidating. One of the first steps you can take on this journey is to learn about the difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormone replacement therapy.

Synthetic hormones are manufactured in a lab — they're designed to act like your body's hormones, but they aren't identical to them. They're a bit like a set of spare keys that sort of work, but maybe they stick a bit in the lock.

Synthetic HRT can be effective in managing hormonal imbalance symptoms. However, because these hormones aren't a perfect match to our natural hormones, some people may experience side effects or feel that the treatment isn't quite “in sync” with their bodies.

On the other hand, bioidentical hormones are also made in a lab but are chemically identical to the hormones your body produces. Think of them as a perfectly cut key that turns smoothly in the lock. Because they're designed to match your hormones exactly, the idea is that your body should recognize and work with them just as it would your own hormones.

BHRT can provide a more personalized treatment approach, as dosages can be adjusted to your body's specific needs. Some people find they have fewer side effects with bioidentical hormones, but everyone's experience can vary.
