About Thrivelab Hormone Health

What Causes Hormone Imbalances?

Age and Life Changes

Major life changes, such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, come with significant hormonal shifts. Since stress can affect hormones, even life events such as a big move, starting a new job, or welcoming a new family member (furry or not) can sometimes result in hormone imbalances.

Additionally, aging can naturally bring hormonal changes for both men and women, potentially leading to imbalances. For instance, men’s testosterone levels tend to drop between 30 and 40 years of age, and they will continue to do so from that point onwards.

Stress: A Silent Culprit

Our fast-paced lifestyles often come with high stress levels, which can wreak havoc on our hormones. Chronic stress can lead to an overproduction of cortisol, known as the "stress hormone," throwing other hormones off balance.

Plus, cortisol is made from the same basic ingredients as other hormones, such as progesterone, testosterone, and estrogen. When your body’s cortisol production goes into overdrive, it can take these ingredients away from other hormones, leaving you with a hormonal imbalance.

Nutritional Deficiencies and Poor Diet

What we eat directly impacts our hormone production. Consuming too much processed food, sugar, or caffeine can disrupt your hormonal balance.

On the other hand, deficiencies in essential nutrients, like vitamins and minerals, can impair hormone production and function. For instance, iodine is necessary for the production of thyroid hormones, while magnesium is essential for progesterone production. If you’re deficient in these nutrients, your body won’t have what it needs to maintain hormone balance.

Lack of Sleep

Skimping on sleep doesn't just leave you feeling groggy — it can also disrupt your hormones. Consistently poor sleep can affect various hormones, including cortisol, insulin, and growth hormones.

We already know how cortisol can affect hormones like estrogen and progesterone, but insulin is another important player in overall hormonal balance. For instance, excess insulin can signal the body to create more testosterone while also lowering sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which can increase estrogen levels in the body.

Environmental Factors

Exposure to certain chemicals in our environment, known as endocrine disruptors, can interfere with hormone function. These can be found in everyday products, such as plastic containers, cosmetics, and certain foods.

For instance, one class of endocrine-disrupting chemicals is called xenoestrogens. These are chemicals that are similar enough to estrogen that the body will try to use them in place of estrogen. Unfortunately, they are often much more potent than natural estrogen and can contribute to symptoms of estrogen imbalance.

Underlying Health Conditions

Certain health conditions can cause hormonal imbalances. These include diabetes, thyroid disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and adrenal disorders, among others.

It's essential to work with a qualified hormone specialist such as the ones we employ at Thrivelab when addressing hormonal imbalances. Our providers can help create a personalized plan that suits your unique needs, helping you tune your body's hormones back into balance.

What Are the Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalances?

Testosterone Imbalances: Understanding Impacts in Men and Women

While testosterone is often associated with men, both sexes can feel the effects of imbalances in this hormone. Men with low levels may experience exhaustion, diminished muscle mass, a drop in libido, and emotional changes. Women with elevated testosterone, conversely, might deal with inconsistent menstrual cycles, excess body hair, breakouts, and fertility complications.

Estrogen and Progesterone Imbalances: Women's Health Indicators

In women, imbalances in estrogen and progesterone often manifest through reproductive and menstrual concerns. Elevated estrogen can lead to symptoms such as intense periods, breast discomfort, mood fluctuations, and weight gain. Lower levels of progesterone, on the other hand, could result in irregular menstrual cycles, chronic exhaustion, headaches, and mood alterations.

Insulin Imbalance: Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes Symptoms

When our bodies struggle to manage insulin, symptoms might start subtly but can become more severe over time. Early indications include a constant sense of hunger, frequent urination, exhaustion, and blurry vision.

If insulin resistance is not addressed, it can evolve into type 2 diabetes, which has more noticeable symptoms like slow-healing sores, recurring infections, and patches of darkened skin.

Thyroid Imbalance: Metabolic Symptom Indicators

Thyroid hormones T3 and T4 play a critical role in your body's metabolism. When these hormones become imbalanced, your metabolic function can swing to extremes.

Hyperthyroidism (an overproduction of T3 and T4) may cause sudden weight loss, a fast or irregular heartbeat, perspiration, and irritability. Hypothyroidism (underproduction of T3 and T4), on the other hand, often leads to weight gain, exhaustion, feelings of depression, and cold sensitivity.

Hormonal imbalances can be challenging and downright confusing. Symptoms can be diverse and subtle and might even mimic other conditions.

However, by listening to your body and seeking professional advice when something seems off, you can take the initial steps toward achieving hormonal balance and regaining your health. Your body operates as a network of interconnected systems, and every single component matters for your overall well-being.

What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a medical treatment that replaces hormones that the body no longer produces or produces in lower amounts. This can often help relieve symptoms of hormone imbalance.

Thrivelab offers a range of hormone replacement therapy options, including testosterone replacement therapy, estrogen replacement therapy, thyroid hormone replacement therapy, and progesterone replacement therapy.

What Are the Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy?

BHRT is designed to help balance your hormones, and when your hormones are balanced, your body tends to function more optimally. You may notice a reduction in common symptoms of hormonal imbalances, like fatigue, mood swings, and brain fog. This can lead to an improvement in your overall quality of life.

For women going through menopause, BHRT can help manage hot flashes, night sweats, and other uncomfortable symptoms that hinder day-to-day living. It can also contribute to the health of your bones, which is particularly important as the risk of osteoporosis increases postmenopause.

For men, testosterone replacement therapy can help manage symptoms of hormone imbalances that come with age, such as decreased libido, loss of muscle mass, and fatigue. TRT can help restore vitality and improve overall wellness.

Remember, though, everyone is unique, and results can vary. That’s why Thrivelab offers personalized treatment plans for wellness with providers that are specialized in hormone health.
