About Thrivelab Hormone Health

What Are Hormones?

Hormones are your body's chemical messengers and are produced by glands in your endocrine system. They travel through your bloodstream, delivering messages to your cells to regulate your body's functions

Each hormone has a specific task, from controlling your mood to managing your metabolism. While many different hormones work together to support your body, there are a few that stand out.

Insulin

Insulin is produced by your pancreas and plays a critical role in your metabolism. It allows your cells to take in glucose (sugar) from your bloodstream and use it for energy, and is essential for maintaining stable blood sugar levels.

Progesterone

Progesterone is a key hormone in the female reproductive system. Produced mainly in the ovaries after ovulation, it prepares the uterus for a potential pregnancy and supports pregnancy if it occurs. It also helps regulate the menstrual cycle.

Estrogen

Estrogen is another major female sex hormone. It's responsible for the development of female sexual characteristics during puberty, regulates the menstrual cycle, and plays a role in bone health. While primarily associated with women, men also produce estrogen — although in much smaller amounts.

Testosterone

Testosterone is often associated with men, as it's primarily responsible for male physical characteristics and sexual function. But it's important for women, too, contributing to bone strength, brain function, and libido.

In men, testosterone is mainly produced in the testes, while in women, it's produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands.

Cortisol

Often called the "stress hormone," cortisol is produced by your adrenal glands. It helps your body respond to stress, regulate metabolism, reduce inflammation, and assist with memory formulation. It's extremely valuable in fight-or-flight situations, but too much or too little can lead to problems.

What Are Some Symptoms of Hormone Imbalances?

Navigating through the world of hormone imbalance can feel like a maze, but understanding the signs can help you recognize if your body is trying to tell you something.

Fatigue

Feeling constantly tired, even after a good night's sleep, could be more than just everyday exhaustion. It's often one of the first signs your hormones might be out of balance.

Unexplained Weight Changes

Have you been eating well and exercising but still gaining weight? Or perhaps losing weight without trying? These could be signs of a hormonal issue, such as thyroid imbalance.

Mood Swings

Mood swings that feel out of control or uncharacteristic can indicate a hormonal imbalance. Hormones play a big role in regulating our emotions, so it's no surprise they can impact our mood.

Sleep Problems

If you're having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, your hormones might be the culprit. Both cortisol and melatonin play crucial roles in regulating sleep.

Persistent Acne

Stubborn acne that doesn't respond to usual skincare treatments can be a sign of hormonal imbalance. Hormones like testosterone can increase oil production, leading to breakouts.

Irregular Periods

For women, irregular periods or changes in menstrual flow can indicate a hormonal imbalance. This might mean periods that are heavier, lighter, more frequent, or missing altogether.

Changes in Libido

A decrease in sex drive can be a sign of hormonal imbalance in both men and women. Hormones like estrogen and testosterone play a crucial role in regulating sexual desire.

Remember, it's perfectly normal to experience some of these symptoms from time to time. But if you're noticing a persistent pattern, you may want to schedule a consultation with one of our certified providers.

What Causes Hormone Imbalances?

Hormonal imbalances are quite common and can be triggered by several factors. Let's take a look at some of the common causes.

Aging & Life Stages

Certain life stages naturally lead to hormonal fluctuations. For women, puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause can all cause temporary imbalances. For instance, menopause can lead to lower estrogen levels, causing symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats.

In men, aging can result in a gradual decline in testosterone, leading to fatigue, mood changes, and reduced sexual desire.

Lifestyle Factors

Our lifestyle choices also play a significant role in hormonal health. Chronic stress can lead to an overproduction of cortisol, the "stress hormone," causing symptoms like weight gain, insomnia, and anxiety. Meanwhile, poor diet and lack of exercise can disrupt insulin levels, leading to weight changes and feelings of constant fatigue.

Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions can throw our hormones out of whack. For example, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women can cause an overproduction of androgens, leading to irregular periods, acne, and unwanted hair growth.

In men, conditions like diabetes, thyroid problems, or hypogonadism (reduced function of the gonads) can disrupt hormone balance, causing symptoms such as weight gain, low libido, and fatigue.

Environmental Factors

Believe it or not, our environment can also influence our hormones. Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in certain plastics, cosmetics, and pesticides can interfere with hormone production and function.

Remember, experiencing these symptoms doesn't automatically mean you have a hormonal imbalance. But if you're noticing a pattern, it's worth visiting us to see if bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may be able to help.

What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a treatment used to balance hormone levels in your body. It involves introducing hormones into your system to supplement or replace those your body may be underproducing.

The benefits of HRT can be quite transformative. For women experiencing menopause, HRT can help alleviate symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats. In men with low testosterone, it can improve sexual function and increase energy levels. It's like turning the dial back up on your body’s hormone production.

What Are Bioidentical Hormones?

When considering hormone replacement therapy (HRT), you'll likely come across two main types: synthetic and bioidentical. Let's unpack the differences between them.

Synthetic hormones are made in a lab and are designed to mimic your body's natural hormones. They can effectively alleviate symptoms of hormonal imbalance, but because they aren't a perfect match to your own hormones, some people might experience side effects or feel the treatment isn't quite 'hitting the spot.'

On the other hand, bioidentical hormones are also created in a lab, but they're chemically identical to the hormones your body produces. This means they should integrate seamlessly with your body's hormone receptors, often leading to more effective symptom relief with potentially fewer side effects.
